Training Up a Child — And Why It Still Matters
A Faith & Family blog post from Trinity Christian Church. Scripture and modern research agree: what we plant in the early years often grows into something lasting.

Raising children in today's world can feel overwhelming. Every parent wants to give their kids a strong foundation, but the path forward isn't always clear. Between busy schedules, cultural pressures, and the constant noise of modern life, it's easy to wonder whether the small spiritual moments we create at home really make a difference.
Scripture gives us a timeless word of encouragement:
"Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." — Proverbs 22:6 (KJV)
This verse isn't a guarantee that every child will follow a perfect path. It's a wisdom principle — a reminder that what we plant in the early years often grows into something lasting. And today, modern research is confirming what God designed from the beginning.
What Scripture Has Always Taught
1. Parents are the primary disciplers
Faith begins at home — not in a program, not in a classroom, but in the daily rhythms of family life.
"And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children…" — Deuteronomy 6:6–7 (KJV)
2. Children imitate what they see
Kids learn faith by watching it lived out.
"The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him." — Proverbs 20:7 (KJV)
3. Community reinforces what home begins
We're not meant to raise children alone.
"…not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together…" — Hebrews 10:24–25 (KJV)
4. Formation is lifelong
Faith is a journey, not a moment.
"My son, hear the instruction of thy father…" — Proverbs 1:8–9 (KJV)
Scripture paints a picture of spiritual formation that is daily, relational, and rooted in love.
What Modern Research Is Showing
Across major studies, researchers are discovering the same patterns Scripture has taught for generations:
- Early faith formation predicts adult belief — Children who grow up with spiritual practices at home are far more likely to continue in faith as adults.
- Warm, connected parenting strengthens faith retention — Faith sticks best when it's paired with love, not pressure.
- Family prayer + Scripture reading matter more than programs — Church programs help, but they can't replace what happens at home.
- Forced participation often backfires — Kids respond to authenticity, not coercion.
- Childhood faith is linked to adult flourishing — Studies show long-term benefits in mental health, purpose, and service.
In short: God's design works.
These findings come from respected, publicly accessible studies including Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (2018), the National Study of Youth & Religion, and Pew Research Center. These aren't fringe studies — they're mainstream research confirming biblical wisdom.
What This Means for Your Family
You don't need a perfect home. You don't need a seminary degree. You don't need to have all the answers.
You simply need:
- Daily rhythms
- Warm connection
- A faith worth imitating
- A community to walk with you
Small moments matter. Simple prayers matter. Open Bibles matter. Your example matters.
God uses ordinary faithfulness to shape extraordinary futures.
